According to the WHO (World Health Organization) more than 1.1 Billion young people worldwide are at risk of hearing loss due to “unsafe listing practices”. More than 50% of people aged 18-24 have experience tinnitus – “ringing in the ears”.

In partnership with Nora En Pure, the Pure Tones initiative was established with the mission to promote responsible ear care and healthy listening practices amongst youth and in the electronic music community. The Pure Tone initiative has committed to distributing over 30 000 pairs of ear plugs throughout South Africa in 2019.
What can I do to protect my hearing?
  • At a concert or nightclub - always wear earplugs. Earplugs take off an average of 15-20dB, making for safer listening – they’re the only thing that can protect you
  • Don’t stand near speakers
  • Give your ears a break from loud music for at least 5 minutes every hour
  • Stay hydrated – dehydration can make the hair cells in your inner ear more vulnerable to damage, as can alcohol
  • If it’s uncomfortably loud or painful, leave
  • Always use the 60 - 6- rule when using earbuds and headphones
